What is an electronic travel permit?

An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a new requirement for foreign citizens from visa-exempt countries who arrive in Canada by air, either to visit the country directly or to transit through.

Do I need an electronic travel permit?

You need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) if you are traveling to Canada by air from a visa-exempt country.

The following do not need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA):

  • Those who have already obtained a valid visa to enter Canada.
  • Any person entering by land or sea.
  • Members of Armed Forces visiting Canada on an official mission.
  • Students with a valid Canadian study permit issued on or after August 1, 2015.
  • Flight crew, civil aviation inspectors, accident investigators.
  • Temporary foreign workers who have a valid Canadian work permit issued on or after August 1, 2015.

  • People entering from the United States or Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, with valid status in Canada.
  • Accredited diplomats.
  • Canadian citizens and dual citizens (provided that you are traveling with a Canadian passport)
  • Permanent residents of Canada (you need a permanent residence card or entry point documents)
  • US citizens (permanent residents of the United States, or green card holders, require an electronic travel permit when traveling by air)

How do I obtain an electronic travel permit?

You can apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) through the Canadian federal government website.

Before applying, you will need:

  • A valid passport
  • As a permanent resident of the United States, you can apply by:
    • A valid U.S. Refugee Travel Document (I-571)
    • A valid permit to re-enter the United States (I-327)
  • A credit card to pay the $ 7 fee
  • A valid email.

When should I apply for an electronic travel permit (eTA)?

The Canadian government advises you to apply as soon as you know you are traveling.

However, last minute eTAs can be obtained by phone (smartphone). All you need is an internet connection. Email authorization often takes only a few minutes.

There are no requirements to print an eTA. It is linked electronically to your passport or travel document.

How long is the electronic travel permit valid for?

An electronic travel authorization (eTA) can be valid for 5 years, or until the passport or travel document has expired.
